Chromogranin A belongs to the granin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins and is found in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. It regulates the function of secretory granules, is involved in hormone processing and secretion, and is degraded into biologically active peptides. Chromogranin A is the most important and abundant granin in neuroendocrine tumors. The antibody chromogranin A is the most specific single marker for such tumors, including tumors of the anterior pituitary gland, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid, and lung, as well as neuronal tumors and Merkel cell carcinomas. Co-expression of chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
