CD56, also known as neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily of adhesion molecules and mediates homophilic interactions via its extracellular region. CD56 is involved in cell-cell adhesion of neural cells during embryogenesis and is expressed in most neuroectodermal tissues. In normal tissue, CD56 labels neurons, glia, Schwann cells, NK cells, and a subset of T cells. CD56 is expressed in most NK cell neoplasms, certain subtypes of T cell lymphoma, and some plasma cell neoplasms.
