Her2/Neu belongs to the human epidermal growth factor family and encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase involved in growth factor signaling pathways. Overexpression of the Her2/Neu gene is associated with the development of various cancers, including breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, bladder, and lung. Her2/Neu plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, as it is overexpressed in 15–30% of all cases, which has been shown to be a predictor of a poor prognosis with more aggressive disease progression and reduced overall survival.
