GATA3 is a zinc-finger protein that acts as a transcription factor regulating the development of various tissues and cell types, including early T cell development and mammary gland development. Expression is found in hematopoietic tissues, such as T cells, and in non-hematopoietic tissues, such as the kidney, central nervous system, skin, and mammary gland. Reduced GATA3 expression is associated with a poor prognosis in luminal breast cancer. Furthermore, GATA3 may be helpful in the detection of urothelial carcinomas.
