Estrogen receptor (ER) is a nuclear hormone receptor that activates the transcription of various genes, particularly in reproductive tissues, which is regulated by its ligand, estrogen. The antibody stains nuclei of cells with high ER concentrations, such as epithelial cells and carcinomas of the breast, uterus, ovary, and prostate. ER is expressed in approximately 75% of all breast cancer cases. Patients with ER-positive tumors are reported to have a better prognosis than those with ER-negative tumors.
