p53 is a tumor suppressor gene and transcription factor. Responding to DNA mutations and other cellular stress signals, p53 helps initiate the transcription of genes that arrest the cell cycle, trigger apoptosis, and DNA repair. Mutations in the p53 gene lead to the loss of tumor suppressor function. In normal cells, p53 is present in very small, almost undetectable amounts because of its short half-life. In malignant cells, p53 is overexpressed and has a greatly increased half-life. Overexpression is found in more than 50% of human cancers and can be associated with an aggressive course and poor prognosis. The p53 antibody can be helpful in the detection of colon, breast, lung, prostate, and ovarian carcinomas.
