Glucose transporters are a large group of membrane proteins that facilitate the transport of glucose across a plasma membrane. GLUT1 is a membrane-associated erythrocytic glucose transport protein, which in turn is an important glucose transporter in the mammalian blood-brain barrier. GLUT1 is expressed in many human tissues, such as the colon, lung, stomach, esophagus, and breast. It is overexpressed in malignant cells and a variety of tumors (breast, pancreas, cervix, endometrium, lung, mesothelium, colon, bladder, thyroid, bone, soft tissue, and oral cavity).
