Keratins are cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins expressed by epithelial cells. Cytokeratin 5 is a type II keratin. This antibody detects metastatic carcinomas in the pleura, epithelial mesotheliomas, almost all squamous cell carcinomas, half of transitional carcinomas, and many undifferentiated large cell carcinomas. A cocktail of CK5, its corresponding partner CK14, and p63 is useful for detecting the basal-like phenotype of breast carcinoma and for distinguishing between normal prostate and prostate cancer.
